The Four Best Places To Keep Your Gold
November 10, 2009 at 10:01 pm

“Keep moving,” said the TSA agent…

Two years ago, I traveled from Las Vegas to Baltimore with five gold coins - worth $8,000 - in my pocket. I wanted to know if the gold coins would set off the airport security systems.

I put my bag onto the belt and threw my shoes into a plastic bin. I kept the coins in my pocket. The security officer beckoned me through the metal detector.

Nothing happened. The gold coins did not set off the metal detector.

I love owning physical gold … [visit site to read more]

TIP ETF: Twice Less Volatile Than The SPY
November 10, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I first mentioned Treasury Inflation Protected Securities or TIPS in an article on August 28 when I noted that “the TIP’s ETF has “broken out” as it appears to be attracting the interest of investors.” Since that time, the iShares Lehman TIPS Bond Fund (TIP) or TIP’s ETF is up 3%.

Figure 1 is a daily chart of the iShares Lehman TIPS Bond Fund - TIP - with volume bars in the middle panel and the on balance volume indicator (with a 40 bar moving average) in the lower panel. On Monday, … [visit site to read more]

Bank Of America - Higher Credit Costs And Worsening Credit Quality Will Be A Drag On Upcoming Results
November 10, 2009 at 8:32 pm

In its latest quarterly Lending & Investing Initiative report, Bank of America Corporation (BAC) said on Monday that it has extended about $184 billion in credit during the third quarter of 2009 to support households and communities.

The report makes obvious how BofA is utilizing the bailout money to support the U.S. economy. According to the report, since the fourth quarter of 2008 when the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was initiated, BofA had extended $759 billion in new … [visit site to read more]

US Bank Credit Standards: The Worst Of The Tightening Is Over
November 10, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Banks have pretty much stopped tightening credit standards, but that doesn’t mean they are easing–maybe not, at least.  The chart below is based on the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Senior Loan Officers.  The question asked is whether they tightened or eased credit standards.   The chart shows “net percent,” which is the percent who said that tightened minus the percent who said they eased.

In this survey, as in recent surveys, no one said he had eased.  It’s all tightening or … [visit site to read more]

A Third Reason To Own Crude Oil
November 10, 2009 at 7:31 pm

We had two reasons to own crude oil, and now we can add a third.

Figure 1 is a weekly chart of a West Texas Crude Oil (cash data). The indicator in the middle panel measures crude oil’s 52 week performance relative to a basket of 8 currencies. Those currencies are: 1) Australian Dollar; 2) Canadian Dollar; 3) Swiss Franc; 4) Eurodollar; 5) British Pound; 6) Singaporean Dollar; 7) Japanese Yen; 8) US Dollar. Is Goldman Sachs Doing God's Work? Wow!
November 10, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Do you get the sense that Wall Street in general and Goldman Sachs in particular are getting overly miffed at the disdain heaped upon it by the American public? I do. In a spirited defense put forth by Goldman Sachs CEO, Lloyd Blankfein invokes the Lord’s name in promoting the virtues of Goldman Sachs’ work. … [visit site to read more]

Send Your Portfolio To Happy Hour With These Beer-Loving Stocks
November 10, 2009 at 7:01 pm

After a decade of global consolidation, beer brewers have greedily hit just about every notable location.

Except Mexico, that is - the ninth-largest beer market in the world.

But Mexican beverage and retail conglomerate Femsa - formerly known as Fomento Economico Mexicano (FMX) - now faces the end of its 25-year Mexican duopoly with rival Grupo Modelo.

Another Big Wave Of Foreclosures Might Make People Realize The Fraud Of Economic Recovery
November 10, 2009 at 5:55 pm

The Dow rose 200 points yesterday, bringing it only about 75 points below the 10,300 level. Why is the 10,300 mark important?

It’s not really…it’s just the point where this bounce will equal the bounce following the crash of ‘29. No reason in particular that this bounce should be the same as the one 80 years ago. But no reason it shouldn’t either.

Gold rises with the stock market. The yellow metal hit a new record over $1,100 yesterday. Why is that that important? Well, it’s not … [visit site to read more]

USD/JPY Testing The Upside
November 10, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Apart from a period where the price moved up then down, the USDJPY has more or less traded below the 200 bar MA since midnight last night.  IN the last hour or so, the price has moved back above the 100 bar MA on the 5 minute chart at the 89.80 level but remains contained.  On the downside, the 89.68/71 level has remained as the low range for the day. Yesterday the low was also 89.68. Since 8:00 AM NYT, the high has been 89.91.  The narrow range is a clue for a range extension.  … [visit site to read more]

In-Your-Face Influence Peddling
November 10, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Based on how slowly financial reform is going, how few people and firms have been punished for indiscretions that helped bring about the worst financial crisis this century, and, most of all, how much public money has been thrown its way, its clear that that the financial industry has done a phenomenal job as far as influence peddling is concerned.

That said, if it was just one industry throwing a bit of grease around, it might not be so bad. But the truth is that many of those who … [visit site to read more]

How Google's Android Could Diminish Apple's Hold On The Smartphone Market, As Well As That Of Research In Motion And Nokia
November 10, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Smartphones have taken the handset market by storm.

Demand for Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones and BlackBerrys from Research in Motion Limited (RIMM) have stayed strong, even through the economic downturn.

It appears that no matter what, many people simply need their touch-screen, pocket-sized, multimedia gadgets.

Sure, it costs a little bit extra to purchase a smartphone (as opposed to a “dumb” one, I guess), but consumers seem willing to splash the extra cash. Consider … [visit site to read more]

Why Oil ETFs Are Lagging Oil Prices
November 10, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Earlier this year, oil exchange traded funds (ETFs) were lagging oil prices by a wide margin thanks to contango. Although the situation has improved, it brings to light a situation that futures-based commodity funds can experience.

In the last month, United States Oil Fund (USO) has been lagging oil prices slightly: it’s up 10.4% in the last month, compared to about 10.7% for oil prices. PowerShares DB Oil (DBO) is up about 10.2% in the same time period.

British Pound Tumbled Earlier On Ratings Cut Fear But Has Since Regained Footing
November 10, 2009 at 2:22 pm

The dollar has stabilized on Tuesday after a raucous battle to begin the week. However, key influences helping the dollar stand up appear to be a series of known factors that may have only provoked light profit taking before the move can continue. With many currencies reaching new highs for this move recently and the dollar index reaching a 13-month low there is a reasonable amount of resistance towards a headlong lunge into fresh territory for now at least.

What Does China's Water Shortage Have To Do With Commodities And Fertilizers?
November 10, 2009 at 2:01 pm

China is the largest importer of soybeans and has been since 2000. China was once the largest exporter of soybeans, but flipped to a net importer in 1995. It may well be impossible for China to meet its demands for soybeans by producing more of its own. Passport Capital, an astute hedge fund, estimates that in order to grow enough soybeans to become self-sufficient, China would need to cultivate an area about the size of Nebraska.

That looks impossible against China’s arable land base, … [visit site to read more]

Ignorance Defense Works On Wall Street
November 10, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Ignorance of the law is never an acceptable defense on Main Street; regrettably, the same does not seem to hold true on Wall Street. How so?

A recent auction-rate securities arbitration case involving an investor who purchased ARS from a Raymond James financial representative acknowledges the ignorance of the sales rep, but effectively absolves the firm in the process. The implications of this decision should not be underestimated.  The Wall Street Journal sheds further light on this … [visit site to read more]

Who Is To Blame For The Credit Card Fiasco
November 10, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I was recently talking to my mother, and she started talking about the evil credit card companies, and how they were out to get us all - right now - by jacking up our rates unfairly in a bid to record massive profits before new consumer-oriented legislation begins going into effect.

She cited personal examples of people who have been coming into the credit union where she works, telling tales of new fees, lower limits, and interest rates doubling overnight for no good reason.
