As jobless rate remains high at 10%, here's the good -- and bad -- news

jobless

With Friday's jobs report showing that U.S. employers cut 11,000 jobs -- 114,000 fewer than expected, the data is the latest to suggest that the economy is getting worse more slowly than in March. But, as President Obama noted Thursday, to really rebound, the economy needs a virtuous cycle and then "the recovery starts to feed on itself."

Much of the improvement in the economy may be a testimony to the economic policies of people like Jason Furman, deputy director of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, who I worked with in the 2004 presidential campaign, and remains focused on job creation.

However, along with the recovery, there are significant costs.

Apple buys Lala, 'cloud' provider of music
December 5, 2009 at 11:30 am

Consumer technology giant Apple (AAPL) has taken a big step into the Internet "cloud" by purchasing streaming music company Lala, a deal that some industry experts value at under $35 million. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple, which already commands a big share of the music industry with its iTunes music service, "could either find a way to adapt Lala's Web song offerings or it could incorporate the startup's technology in a subscription service of some kind." Lala currently allows its customers to rent songs at $0.10 each to be streamed to their handsets.

Apple's iTunes allows customers to buy songs and download them to their computers or iPods. Once the iTunes user has the songs, and in some cases movies, he owns them forever. The model has done well, but it's incomplete. Many people want to stream music any place and any time to any connected device. That allows digital consumers to rent music, which is then sent to them over the Internet "cloud" where it is stored on remote servers.

If you decide to bet on gold, be sure to pick the right investment vehicle
December 5, 2009 at 10:15 am

As gold catapulted to another record high last week on its run to who knows how high, some investors may be wondering if buying in now will leave them enough room to make a profit on their investment. While analysts and traders are telling anyone who will listen that gold is heading higher still, individual investors should be aware of gold's volatility as an investment. Diversifying a portfolio with gold may not make sense for everyone.

If you listened to Wall Street this week, gold sounds like an investment no-brainer. On CNBC's SquawkBox Wednesday, Lou Grasso, a gold trader at Millenium Futures and Peter Schiff, president of Euro Pacific Capital were bullish on gold. Grasso's prediction of $1,800 an ounce was characterized as "cautious" while Schiff's projection of "$5,000 an ounce before Barack Obama leaves office" (Is he suggesting 2012 or 2016?) understated as "optimistic."

AmTrust: not your normal bank failure as 2009 total hits 130

AmTrust BankSix more banks failed based on FDIC data on December 4, including Greater Atlantic Bank, Reston, Va., Benchmark Bank, Aurora, Ill., AmTrust Bank, Cleveland, The Tattnall Bank, Reidsville, Ga., First Security National Bank, Norcross, Ga., and The Buckhead Community Bank, Atlanta, Ga. The latest collapses bring the bank failure tally to 130 for the year.

One of these, AmTrust, was no normal bank failure. The bank, which had a total of 66 branches, was closed by the Office of Thrift Supervision, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as receiver. According to The Wall Street Journal, "AmTrust is the fourth-largest U.S. bank or savings institution to fail so far this year." Its branches will be taken over by New York Community Bank.

Comcast's Brian Roberts: The low-key exec who leads a high-profile giant
December 5, 2009 at 8:00 am

Comcast (CMCSA) CEO Brian Roberts celebrated his 50th birthday in June by competing in and finishing the Philadelphia Triathlon along with a few top lieutenants. That may be good training for the task at hand.

Roberts, 50, who announced a deal on Thursday to gain control of NBC Universal from General Electric (GE,) may become one of the most powerful media titans in U.S. history, but he's decidedly low-key. Unlike his flashier counterparts in Hollywood, Roberts (pictured, left) doesn't crave the spotlight, and sources say many Comcast employees consider him to be a nice guy (but it's easy find outsiders who have less favorable views).

Anod share was offered based on the illegal documentation of the Central Bank
December 4, 2009 at 11:19 am

A conference on "Key issues of the capital market development" was held between senior officials of the state owned companies, insurance and securities organizations. During the conference a study on capital market made by over 10 lawyers of the National Institute of Legislation was presented. Its findings says that the Law on Securities is not clear, lacking specific provisions and incapable of regulating market progress.

Many problems, creating big hindrance in the development of the capital market, were revealed and detected such as unrealistic source of information and lack of human resource.
Once again, Mr.L.Tseveenravdan, the President of the Mongolian Securities Traders Association shares his opinion on the challenging issues.

Q: Capital market relays on trust. But this trust is lost. What would you say about it?

L.Tseveenravdan: Yes, in some extent, it is lost. Shares issued in last two years were poorly traded and with much disputes, such as Hermes and Anod Bank shares. There were few good shares offered including Remicon, but it is sold by only 75% of its face value.

Q: Was it affected by the financial crisis?

L.Tseveenravdan: No, it wasn't. it was because of poor management of listed companies. In other words, they lack of announcements, reports and distributing their dividend. Also shares of listed companies are collected by few traders and investors. Therefore, small traders and investors lost their interest.

Q: Can this gathered shares phenomenon be limited?

L.Tseveenravdan: Once it is sold, it can't be. But we should pay attention on the further steps and issuance. Transparency is lost when few people own majority of shares.

Q: There was discussion about offering Baganuur and Shivee-Ovoo shares of state owned mines at the Mongolian Stock Exchange. Is it possible?

L.Tseveenravdan: Possible, over 50 broker dealer and underwriter companies are ready for it. Over 40 of them have trader seat at MSE. Remaining 10 companies are waiting for mining companies to be listed. Broker and dealer companies are passive in trading, but conducting market study and research on foreign and domestic environment and index.

Q: What is your opinion on Anod and Zoos Bank shares?

L.Tseveenravdan: State considers bankruptcy of Anod Bank. Actually, irresponsible actions of state organizations and agencies played big role to create such a situation. Officially, Central Bank should have permit the Financial Regulatory Commission on Anod Bank IPO. Also last eight months' financial report should have reported. With absence of such actions, FRC allowed Anod Bank start its IPO based on illegal notification of the Central Bank. Anod share, worth of ₮20 billion, sold out in two days. Without flexible interaction and synchronization of state organizations, people and shareholders suffer the loss originated by shares with poor quality.
